Air-dried for high meat inclusion and nutrient preservation

Most dry foods are made by cooking ingredients at very high temperatures, causing vital nutrients to break down. Catit Gold Fern is crafted using a centuries-old air-drying technique that allows for very high meat inclusion, in which all nutrients of the raw ingredients are preserved. The slow, two-stage drying process also eliminates any potential pathogenic bacteria such as salmonella.

Gold Fern - close-up food flakes

Natural texture

Gold Fern has an irresistible natural texture and the appearance of chopped beef jerky. Our artisanal flakes have a much higher moisture content than standard kibble and are perfectly bite-sized for cats to chew and enjoy.

Small batch cat food

Rather than mass-producing huge batches like how traditional kibble is made, we prepare our air-dried recipes in small batches, ensuring that your cat will get the tastiest and most nutritious food. A wet mixture of only the best ingredients is laid out on shallow trays and cooked in low-heat ovens for a long period of time, then carefully diced into smaller portions and lovingly packed.

Feed less, give more™

Catit Gold Fern is a very nutrient-dense cat food, packed to the brim with goodness. Our ingredients are slowly air-dried, shrinking them down while preserving their natural proteins, vitamins and minerals. This means a cup of Gold Fern is generally much more nutritious than an equal amount of other kibble, so you can feed your cat less while giving them so much more!

NZ Green-lipped mussel: superfood for cats

Each Catit Gold Fern recipe includes New Zealand green-lipped mussel, a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, chondroitin, glucosamine and antioxidants, which promote your cat’s joint health and mobility. Whereas heat-treating the mussels would destroy their active properties, ours are gently air-dried to retain their benefits.

Mirroring the whole-prey diet

Cats are natural carnivores, physically built to derive energy from protein. In the wild, cats completely devour their prey. Catit Gold Fern recipes have a high meat inclusion of 95% and were developed to closely resemble a cat’s natural, whole-prey diet by including protein-rich organ meats like liver and gizzard.

NO grains, corn, wheat, soy, cheap fillers or growth hormones

A cat’s natural diet doesn’t contain carbohydrates such as grains, soy, corn or potatoes. They have little nutritional value to cats, and as such, all Catit Gold Fern recipes steer clear of them. We also ban all cheap fillers, sugar, glycerin and growth hormones. Gold Fern is a pure and complete diet that does not compromise on quality.

Enhance your cat’s diet

If your cat is currently on a low protein diet, they may need more time to get used to their new high protein, nutrient-dense diet. Mix Gold Fern in with your cat’s current diet – your cat won’t mind, and you can rest assured that they’re taking in more healthy protein.

Enhance your cat’s diet

No rendered meals

Some cat kibble include rendered meat meal, which is created by applying high temperatures and pressure to meat so you obtain a powdery substance. The meal is usually heat processed a second time when the kibble is extruded, and all this exposure to heat severely compromises the protein quality. In addition, meat meal can come from very low-quality animal sources. Catit Gold Fern provides your cat with a high-quality source of protein that is air-dried and nonheated, without using any rendered meals.

Taurine

Taurine is an essential amino acid that is critical for your cat’s vision, digestion, heart muscle function, and to maintain a healthy immune system. While most mammals are able to physically manufacture enough taurine inside their body to meet their needs, cats have a limited ability to do so. Each Catit Gold Fern recipe contains a balanced amount of taurine, for your cat’s well-being and longevity.

No-hassle alternative to raw food

Give your cat the benefits of a raw diet with the ease of feeding dry food! Our bite-sized flakes are just as nutritious, but much safer and easier to serve and store than raw food.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

GENERAL

Why is Gold Fern air-dried?
Air-drying is a highly efficient method of meat preservation that has been used for centuries. Although our technique has been modernized, our goal is still the same: to create a balanced kibble with high meat content (95%!) and all nutrients preserved. We are proud to share that thanks to our two-stage air drying process, we can include more meat and fully preserve the nutrients of our raw ingredients while eliminating the presence of pathogenic bacteria such as salmonella.

Gold Fern is made in small batches, what does that mean?
Rather than mass-producing 40-tonne batches like how traditional kibble is made, we prepare our air-dried recipes in small batches of 350kg at a time, ensuring that your cat will get the tastiest and most nutritious food. A wet mixture of only the best ingredients is laid out on shallow trays and cooked in low-heat ovens for a long period of time, then carefully diced into smaller portions and lovingly packed.

What’s so great about Gold Fern being made in New Zealand?
Foods made in New Zealand are recognized worldwide for their high quality. New Zealand’s farming industry is highly regulated and doesn’t allow the use of growth hormones, dangerous pesticides, or GMOs, and their standards of animal welfare are some of the highest in the world. The country is a pristine island nation with a strict biosecurity policy, ensuring Gold Fern is made with ingredients of the highest quality and palatability. By sustainably sourcing our ingredients, New Zealand’s beauty is preserved for future generations.

FEEDING

How much Catit Gold Fern should I feed my cat? And how often?
Catit Gold Fern can be fed as a complete diet, mixed in with another diet for added overall quality and taste, or given as a daily treat. When fed exclusively, use this guide and adjust according to your cat’s weight and activity level.
(see feeding guide table on bag)

The amount of Catit Gold Fern that I should feed my cat seems smaller in comparison to my old kibble.
Catit Gold Fern is a very nutrient-dense cat food. Our ingredients are slowly air-dried, shrinking them down while preserving their natural proteins, vitamins and minerals. This means a cup of Gold Fern is generally more nutritious than an equal amount of other kibble.

Can I use Catit Gold Fern as treats?
Absolutely! Cats love Catit Gold Fern as a healthy, high-protein treat. Moreover, the flakes aren’t sticky or greasy, so you can spoil your cat without getting your hands dirty.

Is Catit Gold Fern suited for kittens and senior cats?
Yes. Kittens can start to enjoy Catit Gold Fern from the age of 6 weeks on. Please make sure to cut the larger flakes up into smaller pieces in case chewing them proves challenging to your kitten. The same goes for feeding senior cats.

Can I mix Catit Gold Fern with other cat food?
Of course! Mixing Gold Fern with your cat’s current diet will enhance the overall quality and taste.
If you wish to transition to Catit Gold Fern as an exclusive diet, we recommend mixing Catit Gold Fern with your cat’s current food gradually, in increasing amounts.

Do I need to feed my cat wet food in addition to Gold Fern kibble?
When fed as an exclusive diet, Catit Gold Fern is a complete dry food that does not need to be complimented with wet food. Please make sure that your cat has access to fresh, clean water at all times.

Is Catit Gold Fern suited for cats with diabetes / allergies / urinary tract problems?
If your cat has a medical condition, we recommend consulting your veterinarian or cat nutritionist before changing their diet, to make sure that you make the best possible decision for your cat’s specific health needs.

INGREDIENTS

How come Catit Gold Fern has such a high meat content?
Cat need meat to survive, in fact, they nearly completely devour their prey in the wild. By air-drying our ingredients, we can include up to 95% meat content in our food! That’s much more than your standard kibble, with a meat content somewhere in the mid-40%.

Why are proteins so important in cat food?
Cats are natural carnivores that need protein to stay happy and healthy. Their bodies break down protein into amino acids, which is needed to build muscle cells and enzymes. Catit Gold Fern closely resembles a raw whole-prey diet, with a whopping 95% meat, high-protein content, containing all the vital nutrients that your cat needs to thrive.

Which organ meats can be found in Catit Gold Fern?
If your cat were to catch a bird in the wild, they would be happy to gobble up their prey nearly whole, organ meats and all. Catit Gold Fern recipes contain various organ meats, as they are great sources of protein:
Catit Gold Fern Lamb & Mackerel contains lamb kidney and liver
Catit Gold Fern Beef contains beef kidney and liver
Catit Gold Fern Chicken contains chicken gizzard and liver

Why choose grain-free cat food like Gold Fern?
Diets that include large amounts of grain, rice and corn can be higher in carbohydrates and therefore harder for cats to digest and metabolize. High levels of carbs can cause surges in blood sugar, which may lead to hyperactivity and could cause your cat to gain weight. Catit Gold Fern is low-carb since it doesn’t contain any grains, corn, soy, rice or wheat – in contrast, our recipes are high in animal protein to help keep your cat in shape!

What is taurine?
Taurine is an essential amino acid that is critical for your cat’s vision, digestion, heart muscle function, and to maintain a healthy immune system. While most mammals are able to physically manufacture enough taurine inside their body to meet their needs, cats have a limited ability to do so. This means taurine absolutely must be included in their diet. Each Catit Gold Fern recipe contains a balanced amount of taurine, for your cat’s well-being and longevity.

Catit Gold Fern is free of rendered meals. What does that mean?
Some cat kibble include rendered meat meal, which is created by applying high temperatures and pressure to meat so you obtain a powdery substance. The meal is usually heat processed a second time when the kibble is extruded, and all this exposure to heat severely compromises the protein quality. In addition, meat meal can come from very low-quality animal sources. Catit Gold Fern provides your cat with a high-quality source of protein that is only air-dried, without using any rendered meals.
